What total protein measures
Total protein is the combined amount of two families of protein in your blood: albumin and globulin. Albumin — the single biggest one — is made by the liver and keeps fluid inside your blood vessels while ferrying hormones, drugs and other cargo. Globulins are everything else: antibodies, transport proteins and clotting factors. The total-protein test simply adds them all up.
That's the single most important thing to understand: the total is nonspecific. A normal total can hide an abnormal split (low albumin balanced by high globulin), and an abnormal total tells you something changed but not what. Its value comes almost entirely from being read alongside the albumin and the albumin-to-globulin (A/G) ratio, which reveal where the change is.
