What free T3 measures

Free T3 is the fraction of triiodothyronine that's unbound and available to your tissues. T3 is the more active thyroid hormone: your thyroid makes some directly, but most T3 is produced by converting T4 (thyroxine) into T3 in the tissues. The free T3 test measures the small, active, unbound portion — the part that actually does the work of setting your metabolic rate.

Because T3 is downstream of T4, free T3 behaves a little differently from free T4.
