Corrected sodium calculator
Correct a sodium result for a high glucose. When blood sugar is high it dilutes sodium, making it read falsely low — this estimates the true sodium using the Katz and Hillier formulas. Sodium in mmol/L (= mEq/L); glucose in mg/dL or mmol/L.

## What corrected sodium numbers mean

| < 135 mmol/L | Low (hyponatraemia) |
| 135–145 mmol/L | Normal |
| > 145 mmol/L | High (hypernatraemia) |
If a low measured sodium **corrects back into 135–145**, the low reading was largely a dilution effect from high glucose. If it's **still low after correcting**, that points to genuine hyponatraemia. Ranges vary by lab, so read against your own report.
## The formulas
For every 100 mg/dL that glucose sits above 100, sodium is nudged up:
- **Katz (1973):** corrected Na = measured Na + **1.6** × (glucose − 100) ÷ 100
- **Hillier (1999):** corrected Na = measured Na + **2.4** × (glucose − 100) ÷ 100
Katz is the traditional factor; Hillier's larger factor fits better at very high glucose (above roughly 400 mg/dL / 22 mmol/L). In SI units, glucose (mmol/L) is converted to mg/dL (× 18) before applying the formula. If glucose is normal, both corrections are essentially zero.
