## What the ratios mean | Ratio | Optimal | Moderate | High | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | **Total cholesterol : HDL** | < 3.5 | 3.5–5 | ≥ 5 | | **LDL : HDL** | < 2 | 2–3 | > 3 | | **Triglyceride : HDL** (mg/dL) | < 2 | 2–4 | > 4 | The **total:HDL** and **LDL:HDL** ratios are unit-independent — the units cancel, so they read the same in mg/dL or mmol/L. The **triglyceride:HDL** ratio does depend on units (triglycerides and HDL convert differently), so the bands above are for mg/dL; this calculator converts for you when you switch units. A lower ratio generally reflects a more favourable balance between “bad” and “good” cholesterol.
