ANC calculator
Work out your absolute neutrophil count (ANC) — the best single number for infection risk — from your white blood cell count and the % neutrophils (and bands) on a CBC differential. Values in ×10⁹/L (= ×10³/µL).
Your privacy: this calculator runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere. It's the same on-device principle Quanome is built on.
Educational reference only — not medical advice. A low ANC (neutropenia), and especially a fever with one, needs prompt medical attention, not self-management. Reference ranges vary by lab.
## What ANC numbers mean
| ANC | Band |
| --- | --- |
| > 1.5 ×10⁹/L (> 1,500 /µL) | Normal |
| 1.0–1.5 ×10⁹/L (1,000–1,500 /µL) | Mild neutropenia |
| 0.5–1.0 ×10⁹/L (500–1,000 /µL) | Moderate neutropenia |
| < 0.5 ×10⁹/L (< 500 /µL) | Severe neutropenia (high infection risk) |
The lower the ANC, the higher the risk of serious infection. **Severe neutropenia** (below 0.5) is watched closely, and a **fever with a low ANC** (febrile neutropenia) is a medical emergency — it's the ANC, not the total white count, that clinicians act on.
## The formula
- **ANC = WBC × (% neutrophils + % bands) ÷ 100**
- Neutrophils are the mature 'segs'; bands are the immature ones — both fight infection, so both are included. If your report doesn't list bands, leave it blank.
- The WBC is the same number in ×10⁹/L or ×10³/µL, so the ANC comes out the same; this tool shows it both as ×10⁹/L and as cells/µL.
## The rest of your white-cell panel
The ANC comes from the CBC differential — read it with the related numbers:
