Two waste products are filtered by your kidneys: urea (reported in the US as BUN, blood urea nitrogen) and creatinine. They behave slightly differently — BUN is influenced by hydration, protein intake, and blood flow, while creatinine tracks more steadily with kidney filtration and muscle. Dividing one by the other gives a ratio that helps a clinician tell where a problem is likely coming from: before the kidney (blood flow/hydration), the kidney itself, or after it.
Like most derived values, it's nonspecific — a starting clue that's only meaningful next to the actual BUN, creatinine, and eGFR.
