Here's what platelets do, the typical range, what specific values mean, and when a low count needs prompt attention.

What platelets do

Platelets (thrombocytes) are small cell fragments that make your blood clot — they clump at the site of a damaged vessel and form the initial plug that stops bleeding. When the count drops, the main consequence is a greater tendency to bruise and bleed, and how much that matters depends heavily on how low the count is.

The CBC reports how many platelets are circulating. A count below the reference range is thrombocytopenia, but the label alone doesn't tell you the cause or the severity — that comes from the number, the trend, your symptoms, and the rest of the blood count.

The key caveat: a mildly low count in someone who feels well is a very different situation from a falling count or one with bleeding symptoms. A common false alarm: pseudothrombocytopenia

Worth knowing before you worry: a low platelet result can be a lab artifact. In some people, platelets clump together in the EDTA tube used to collect the sample, and the analyser counts the clumps as fewer platelets than are really there. This is called pseudothrombocytopenia — a false low, not a real one. If an unexpected low count turns up in someone with no bruising or bleeding, a clinician will often simply repeat the test in a different tube (citrate) to check before doing anything more. It's a genuinely common explanation for a surprising result.

How it's read alongside the rest of the CBC

A low platelet count reads very differently depending on the company it keeps. Isolated thrombocytopenia — with normal red and white cells — points toward causes like ITP, a medication, or a lab artifact. A low platelet count alongside low haemoglobin or an abnormal white count suggests something affecting the marrow or multiple cell lines, which is investigated more thoroughly, often with a blood film. When to talk to a doctor

Any low platelet count is worth a clinician's interpretation, and some situations need prompt care: a markedly low count (roughly below 20 x10^9/L), or any low count with active bleeding — nosebleeds that won't stop, bleeding gums, blood in urine or stool, or a rash of tiny red-purple spots (petechiae).
