Immature granulocytes (IG) showing up on a blood count can look alarming, but in most cases it just means your bone marrow is doing its job — releasing young cells early to fight something off. Here's what IG measures, the typical range, what a high value usually means, and when it's worth a closer look.

What immature granulocytes measure

Neutrophils — your immune system's first responders — are made in the bone marrow, where they mature through several stages before entering the blood. Immature granulocytes are those younger stages (metamyelocytes, myelocytes, promyelocytes) that normally stay in the marrow until they're ready. Modern CBC analyzers can count them, reporting an IG% and an absolute IG count.

When a few appear in the bloodstream, it usually means the marrow is under demand and releasing cells early — a pattern clinicians call a "left shift." Like the rest of the white-cell picture, it's nonspecific: it tells you the marrow is busy, not exactly why.
